Choosing destinations around the world to live in seemed like an impossible task in the beginning.
Obviously with 3 small children under 6, we had to reconsider a few destinations that were deemed too risky or unsuitable for our family needs. Clean water, access to hospitals and healthcare, minimal political unrest and ease of access are essential, primary requirements per destination. Mexico, Vietnam, Thailand and South America were immediately ruled out because of this. I know I’ll get those places in due course.
We involved the children (as much as possible) and enquired where they would like to live. A mix of their answers included; a beach, somewhere to swim every day, theme parks, yummy food, parks and so on. With much consideration, we have decided to lock in many destinations but remain flexible to the itinerary at this point. We want the option to stay somewhere if we love it, or move on quickly if the fit isn’t quite right for us.
The plan is to hopefully travel the world for 12 months. We are heading in an easterly direction as this was a factor for our round the world airplane tickets. We wanted to experience Europe in the summer and then head to the USA to experience a ski season up in the mountains of Colorado. Fingers crossed we even have a white Christmas!
Mind you, these destinations are not all confirmed but we are hoping the itinerary will look something like this:
Singapore – Singapore
Japan – Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima
China – Hong Kong
UK – London, Edinburgh
Greece – Athens, Lefkada, Zakynthos
Turkey – Istanbul
Croatia – Dubrovnik, Split, Brac or Korcula
Hungary – Budapest
Austria – Vienna and Salzburg
Germany – Munich, possibly Berlin
Italy – Florence, Venice, Rome, Milan
Switzerland – Geneva
France – Annecy, Lyon, Paris
Denmark – Copenhagen
Sweden – Gothenburg
USA – Washington DC, New York City, The Hamptons, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Austin, Palm Springs, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, San Fransisco, Denver, Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Maui, Oahu
Canada – Vancouver, Calgary
Reading those places above is surreal. That myself and my children will be passing through so many amazing countries and be able to experience all they have on offer.
If you have any suggestions / recommendations / advice for the above countries, please send them my way. You can reach me on facebook or via email or leave a comment here. I am hoping to venture off the beaten tourist track quite a bit. Quirky bookstores, quaint cafes, unique shops, anything! Send it my way!
